Plasmonic waves allow perfect transmission through sub-wavelength metallic gratings

چکیده
We investigate the transmission properties of a metallic layer with narrow slits. Recent measurements and numerical calculations concerning the light transmission through metallic subwavelength structures suggest that an unexpectedly high transmission coefficient is possible. We analyze the time harmonic Maxwell’s equations in the H-parallel case for a fixed incident wavelength. Denoting by η > 0 the typical size of the complex structure, effective equations describing the limit η → 0 are derived. For metallic permittivities with negative real part, plasmonic waves can be excited on the surfaces of the channels. When these waves are in resonance with the thickness of the layer, the result can be perfect transmission through the layer. Upscaling of Helmholtz Equation Originating in Transmission through Metallic Gratings in Metamaterials
We investigate the transmission properties of a metallic layer with narrow slits. We consider (time-harmonic) Maxwell's equations in the H-parallel case with a fixed incident wavelength. We denote η > 0 as the typical size of the complex structure and obtain the effective equations by letting η → 0. For metallic permittivities with negative real part, plasmonic waves can be excited on the surfa...
متن کاملPlasmonic resonance shift for various nanodevice geometries
Plasmonic nanodevices are metallic structures that exhibit plasmonic effects when exposed to light, causing scattering and enhancement of that light. These plasmons makes it possible for light to be focused below the diffraction limit. Darkfield spectroscopy has been used to capture the scattering spectra of these structures in order to examine the scattering and resonant frequencies of the pla...
متن کاملSurface wave splitter based on metallic gratings with sub-wavelength aperture.
We investigated the splitting of surface electromagnetic waves trapped at the output surface of a one-dimensional metallic grating structure. The output gratings of the structure asymmetrically such that the output surfaces at the different sides of the subwavelength aperture can support surface waves at different frequencies. The transmission amplitude as measured at the left side is 1,000 tim...

In this paper, we analyze the transmission properties of metallic gratings at optical frequencies. In particular, we show that an inherently ultra-broadband tunneling mechanism may be obtained based on impedance matching between the guided modes supported by ultranarrow slits and freespace TM plane waves impinging at an oblique angle. This phenomenon is the analogous of the well-known Brewster ...

Dielectric and metallic gratings have been studied for more than a century.
